Clinical Outcomes and OHRQoL of Single-implant Overdenture Wearers

Objectives: This prospective paired clinical trial assessed the clinical and self-reported outcomes of elderlies using single-implant mandibular overdentures (SIO) after a 24-months follow-up period.
Methods: Fifteen elderly individuals (68.27±4.77) with a residual alveolar bone height between 11 and 15 mm received an external hexagon implant inserted in the mandibular midline. A metallic framework was inserted in the lower denture. A conventional loading was performed and equator attachments were used for retention. All prosthodontic events were recorded during follow-up and analysed descriptively. Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-Edent) was used to measure the OHRQoL. Data were analysed by ANOVA for repeated measures and Student paired t-test (P<0.05).
Results: The post-loading implant survival rate was 93.3%. Equator matrix change was the more incident maintenance event (86.79%). No denture fracture occurred in the assessed period, but 3 SIO had a crack in the posterior region. The general score of OHRQoL, and domains of “functional limitation” and “physical pain" were reduced (P<0.05) after SIO installation. No differences in OHRQoL were observed between 12 and 24 months of SIO use.
Conclusions: Findings suggest that the metallic framework insertion could prevent denture fracture. Also, the use of a SIO brings positive effects on OHRQoL and the treatment remains feasible after a 24-months period.
