Utility of Mucosal Protecting Mouthguards in Patients with Oral Pathologies

Objectives: To evaluate the usefulness of mucosal protection mouthguards in patients with oral pathologies.
Methods: Non-randomized clinical trial with 17 patients from the School of Dentistry of the University of Cartagena and the Stomatological consultation of the Hospital Alemán in Buenos Aires. Clinical records and stomatological examination were performed, which allowed to identify and describe the lesions in each patient. The MPMs were made by taking impressions with alginate and cast in stone plaster. A thermoplastic polymer was used in the manufacturing of the mouthguard, with a soft consistency and 0.2 mm thickness which, when heated in the Vacupress, conforms to the model and is finally smoothed down. Changes in lesions were evaluated after 15, 30 and 45 days of placement of MPMs.
Results: 58% were female and 42% male; 76% used the mouthguard as an insulator due to traumatic habits and 24% used it as a vehicle for application of medications. Bitten mucosa and Lichen Planus were the most frequent pathologies with 23% each. 100% of the evaluated patients achieved significant improvements with the use of MPMs. 40% of patients achieved it after 15 days.
Conclusions: MPMs showed to be an important preventive and therapeutic alternative used in traumatic lesions of the buccal mucosa. It is also useful as a vehicle to keep medications in contact with mucous membranes.
