Microbiota of Biofilms from Acrylic Complete-arch Fixed Implant Prosthesis
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify bacteria and fungi present in biofilm samples from acrylic complete-arch fixed implant prosthesis.
Methods: Twenty patients were selected and had the mandibular prosthesis removed and washed with sterile saline. Biofilm samples were collected from gingival surface of the prosthesis, diluted up to 1:107 , seeded in chromogenic agar media and incubated for 48 hours at 37°C, for colony forming units (CFU/mL) counting. DNA hybridization was also performed for identification and quantification of present microorganisms. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test, Spearman correlation and Fisher's exact test (α=0.05).
Results: Enterococcus spp (5.82 ± 1.38 log10 CFU/mL) and S. aureus (5.75 ± 2.02 log10 CFU/mL) presented higher counts and prevalence in cultures. Patients’ age did not influence the culture results. Patients with 5 implants presented higher E. coli counts (p=0.039). DNA hybridization showed higher quantification of S. pneumoniae, V. parvula and F. nucleatum, which were present in all samples. Biofilms of patients over 65 years old contained more C. tropicalis (p = 0.049).
Conclusions: It was concluded that all analyzed prostheses presented biofilms with contamination by potentially pathogenic microorganisms, emphasizing the importance of instructions for patients and periodic returns to the dentist for control of this biofilm.
