Teaching Person-Centered Care: A Futuristic Approach
Objectives: Increased patients’ expectations and educational research outcomes are impacting the way dental education is designed, delivered and assessed. This presentation will highlight results from the "Shaping the Future of Dental Education" workshop hosted by ADEA and ADEE in 2019. The workshop was aimed to highlight an innovative approach by blending the latest technologies with scientific discoveries to facilitate a comprehensive oral health in an academic setting.
Methods: The workshop was structured in 2 parts: engaging presentations and group discussions. The first presentation described the differences and similarities between the concepts: “person” vs. “patient” vs. “student”-centered dental teaching care. In addition, opportunities and challenges to incorporate such a model for the academic, research, and practicing dental communities were presented. The second presentation, shared lessons learned of bringing a dream into reality by development and implementation of a new technology. The dream consisted of a futuristic approach to clinical dental training integrating technology and clinical training. The participants applied the ideas in the keynote addresses to the proposed Logic educational model (assumptions, planned work and intended results) Results: Participants (faculty members, students, practitioners and corporate representatives) from various countries worked collaboratively in 6 different teams. They compiled Logic educational models for academic settings: preclinical, clinical and didactic. An example of the proposed Logic model was selected, describing additional details for the planned work: resources needed and activities, but also for the intended results: output, outcomes and impact. The use of such a framework guided the discussions to a meaningful experience appreciated by all.
Conclusions: This workshop was a valuable experience to highlight opportunities and challenges for all stakeholders when aiming to incorporate new technologies to facilitate patient care and students’ education.
