Shear Bond Strength of a New Composite System to Dentin

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the dentin shear bond strength of a new composite system compared to two commercially available composite systems after artificial aging.
Methods: Human molars (n=60) were sectioned, mounted and ground to a flat dentin surface using 320/400/600 SiC polishing papers. A universal bonding agent (Adhese® Universal/Ivoclar Vivadent) was applied to the dentin surface according to the manufacturer's instructions. Specimens were placed in the Ultradent jig and composite was applied via the nylon insert. The specimens were randomly distributed into three experimental groups (n=20) consisting of three different composites (Tetric® PowerFill, Tetric EvoCeram® Bulk Fill, Tetric EvoCeram®/Ivoclar Vivadent). The materials were light cured according to the manufacturer's instructions using the Bluephase® PowerCure (Ivoclar Vivadent). Each group was further divided (n=10) based on the method of aging (24h at 37°C and 24h at 37°C + 10,000 thermocycles from 5°C to 55°C).

Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference in shear bond strength between composite systems or between aging methods.

    Data was analyzed by one-way univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA), p < 0.05. Follow up multiple comparisons (Tukey HSD) were performed.
