Profile of Edentulous Patients and Analysis of Risk Factors for Denture-stomatitis

Objectives: To characterize the socio-demographic profile of the edentulous patients attended at the School of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, and to correlate the possible risk factors to Denture Stomatitis, Colony Forming Units (CFU) and degrees of severity of stomatitis.
Methods: The sample consisted of 100 users of total dentures diagnosed with ERP (CAAE: 93712418.1.0000.5419). The specifics questionnaires were applicated about medical and dental history, practices dental hygiene, edentulism time, upper and under dentures time use and use continued during the night. The samples of biofilm were collected of the palate and of the maxillary prosthesis in the baseline and seeded in specific media for Streptococcus mutans, Candida spp., Gram-, and Staphylococcus spp. The collected data were submitted to statistical analysis by Pearson correlation test and significant differences were considered when p <0.05.
Results: Among the selected patients, 83.3% (n = 83) were women and 16.7% men (n = 17), aged 50 to 82 years (65.67 ± 6.82), married (23%), with a low level of education (87%) and income (94.4%). Only 9.3% and 14.8% considered yours overall and oral health poor, respectively, although 81.5% of patients have degree IB to III denture stomatitis. There was a positive correlation (0.351) between the lowest frequency of dentist visits and the highest Gran- CFU in the dentures. Longer toothlessness correlated with the presence of Gran- (0.275-prosthesis) and S. mutans (0.403-palate and 0.378-prosthesis). The use of adhesive in the upper prosthesis correlated with higher CFU of Candida albicans (0.389-palate) and Gran negative (0.304-palate). The use of mouthwash was strongly correlated with Gran- CFU (0.827-palate).

Conclusions: Patients were unaware of the importance of maintaining oral health and could not correlate the presence of inflammation with the need for oral hygiene and of the prosthesis, as well as the need for a return to dental care.
