Prevention effect of Theobromine containing Toothpaste on Early Childhood Caries
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of theobromine containing toothpaste (TheodentTM Kids) on remineralization of white spot lesions, the short term effect on Mutans Streptococcus ,and the buffering capacity of saliva in children with Early Childhood Caries (ECC). Methods: The study was conducted on 26 four- to five-year-old children with ECC who visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Dental School. Salivary pH, buffering capacity and Streptococcus mutans level measured using Saliva-Check Buffer and Saliva-Check Mutans test kit(GC, Japan). Every child was given fluoridated toothpaste and TheodentTMKids WSLs and carious lesion were categorised according to the ICDAS-II DIAGNOdent(KaVo, Biberach, Germany) measurements were performed from baseline, after 1 month. The statistical significance of the results was assessed using SPSS paired samples t-test, p-values of <0.05 were considered significant. Results: We included 13 children(mean age(SD) 4.25(0.50) with 170 teeth in the Fluoride Toothpaste and 13 children(mean age (SD) 4.46(0.52) with 115 teeth in TheodentTMKids Toothpaste. Both toothpastes showed a highly significant(p < 0.0001) remineralizing potential at the end of the treatment. There was a significant increase between the baseline and 1-month results of the salivary pH. measurements in TheodentTMKids (p=0.013). The buffering capacity increase was statistically significant with both toothpastes(p=0.0001;p=0.003). The TheodentTM Kids group, the S mutans level in the saliva were decreased, which was found to be statistically significant(p<0.05). Conclusions: Theobromine containing toothpaste can be considered as an effective agent in remineralizing smooth-surface white spot lesions and can be used in treatment of early caries lesions.
