Bond Durability of Self-adhesive Cement Containing Silane to Tooth-colored Materials

Objectives: Self-adhesive composite cements are now frequently applied to daily practice due to their simple procedure for luting. A self-adhesive cement containing a silane coupling agent was introduced in 2019 (SA Luting Multi: SA, Kuraray Noritake Dental). The objective of this study was to evaluate the bond durability of SA to tooth-colored restorative materials in comparison to an existing self-adhesive cement (RelyX UnicemII Automix: RelyX, 3M ESPE).
Methods: Tooth-colored restorative materials used as adherends were two cured composites (Clearfil AP-X and KATANA AVENCIA, Kuraray Noritake Dental) and a porcelain (VITABLOCS MarkII, VITA). Flat surfaces of the adherends were wet-ground with 600-grit SiC paper. Stainless steel rods (ø4.5 mm) were bonded to areas of ø3.5 mm on the surfaces with the following groupings – Group 1: Bonding with SA, Group 2: Bonding with RelyX, and Group 3: Bonding with RelyX and its silane coupling agent (RelyX Ceramic Primer). The rods were loaded at 11.6 N, and the cements were irradiated at 1,100 mW/cm2 for 40 seconds from four directions (10 seconds each). The bonded specimens were subjected to shear test after 37°C water storage for 24 h and after the thermal cycles (5°C and 55°C, 10,000 cycles). The resulting data were statistically analyzed within each adherend using Steel-Dwass test (α = 0.05).
Results: Group 1 did not decrease the bond strengths to all the adherends with the thermal cycles, however, Groups 2 and 3 exhibited the significant decreases except Group 2/Clearfil AP-X.
Conclusions: The bond durability of the self-adhesive cement containing silane coupling agent was superior to that of the existing self-adhesive cement.
