Effectiveness of Two Methods to Identify Infected Dentin In vitro
Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of the tactile visual method (MVT) with the method use FD&C green pigment in a glycol base (DCV) and 1% propylene glycol acid red caries detectors (DCR) to show the presence of infected dentin after carious removal in extracted teeth. Methods: In vitro study. 36 extracted posterior teeth, with intermediate occlusal carious lesion evidenced through radiographs, were randomly distributed in 3 groups: Group 1: 12 teeth, the carious lesion was removed using only the MVT, to identify the infected dentin according to the clinical characteristics of color, appearance and consistency. Group 2 and 3: 12 teeth for each group, DCV and DCR were applied respectively to identify infected dentin. In all three groups, carious enamel was removed with high-speed diamond burrs, blue halo and the carious lesion was removed with dentine curette. Subsequently, the histological processing of decalcification of the teeth was performed, 5 μm cuts were made, Gram staining was used and the presence or absence of bacteria in the dentinal tubules was observed under a light microscope. Results: Histologically, a similar percentage of bacteria was observed in the dentinal tubules in samples removed with the MVT (41.67%) compared to the samples of the groups that applied the DRV (58.33%) and DCR (50%) Conclusions: The MVT alone demonstrated effectiveness to identify infected dentin, finding no difference compared to the method that used caries detectors DCV and DCR as an auxiliary element. However, both methods are equally effective.
