Bonding Characteristic to Cervical Decayed Dentin using All-in-one Adhesive Systems
Objectives: All-in-one adhesive systems are frequently applied to the decayed tooth-substance. This study examined the bonding characteristic to cervical decayed dentin using all-in-one adhesive systems. Methods: For bonded surface, cervical abrasion-lesion dentin(ALD) and cervical caries-affected dentin(CAD) were selected from extracted human premolar. In addition, sound-dentin wall(SD) was prepared to intact human premolar as control. Four all-in-one adhesive systems; an experimental adhesive(XTE, 3M), Prime&Bond universal(PBU, Dentsply Sirona), Scotchbond Universal Adhesive(SBU, 3M), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick(UBQ, Kuraray Noritake Dental), and a two-step self-etching system; Clearfil SE Bond 2(SE2, Kuraray Noritake Dental: as control) were chosen. The ALD surface was cleaned with a polishing-brush under water. The outer layer of CAD was removed with Caries Detector(Kuraray Noritake Dental) and steel bur. The bonded surfaces were treated with each system according to manufacturer’s instruction. The immediate-tensile-bond-strength(ITBS) were measured(n=8) with a custom-made portable adhesion tester. The data were examined with ANOVA, Tukey’s test and Weibull analysis. Results: The mean ITBS(SD) in MPa to three-types of dentin, Weibull modulus and stress value in MPa for 10% probability of failure level[PF10] were ALD:23.6(6.4)<4.2>[15.1], CAD:21.5(5.7)<4.3>[14.1], SD:27.3(6.3)<5.1>[19.1]. ITBS to three-types of dentin did vary with the systems. Wm of ALD and CAD were significantly lower than SD. PF10 of ALD and CAD were significantly inferior to SD. Wm of five systems to decayed dentin decreased in following order; UBQ>XTE=SBU>SE2>PBU. PF10 values decreased in following order; XTE>UBQ>SBU>SE2>PBU. Wm and PF10 of SE2 had no significant difference with other systems. PF10 of XTE was significantly higher than PBU. Conclusions: The mean bond strength, bonding reliability(determined from Wm) and durability(estimated from PF10) to cervical decayed dentin(ALD and CAD) seemed to be inferior to sound-dentin(SD). The bonding characteristic of all-in-one adhesive systems including a new adhesive XTE to cervical decayed dentin was similar to that of SE evaluated as a golden standard system.
