Chronology Eruption of Teeth in Babies Born in Brasília- Brazil

Objectives: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the chronology and sequence of primary teeth eruption and evaluate the associated factors that possibly influence the eruption time of tooth in babies born at the University Hospital of Brasilia, Brazil.
Methods: Data for this study was collected as part of a longitudinal investigation among a cohort study of babies that was born from August 2017 to July 2018. At birth, a form containing an eruption diagram was given to the mothers, who were instructed to fill in it with date and sequence of tooth eruption. During the first appointment, 1 year follow-up, oral examination was done. Associated factors as gender, breastfeeding, twinning, mother's age and other close-ended questions in questionnaire were asked from parents. Data from the diagram were collected and analyzed.
Results: Of the 397 babies evaluated, the mean age was 12 months, 50.6% were boys and 49.4% girls. The first tooth eruption in 53.2% of babies occurred between 6 and 8 months of age, and in 28.9% and 17.9% between 9 and 12 months and 3 to 5 months, respectively. Regarding to the number of erupted teeth, 59.6% presented 5 to 8 teeth in oral cavity. The most frequent sequence was: lower central incisors, upper central incisors, upper lateral incisors, lower lateral incisors, lower first molars, upper first molars and upper canine. Boys who are still breastfeeding and born at term had teeth in the oral cavity earlier, although there was no statistically significant difference (p> 0.05).
Conclusions: It was concluded that the eruption sequence is in agreement with the literature, and the eruption of the first tooth occurred predominantly between 6-8 months of age. Additionally, associated factors did not influenced the eruption pattern.
