Lingual Frenulum Evaluation in Twins Using Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool

Objectives: This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the lingual frenulum pattern in twins derived from a birth cohort study.
Methods: All twins born at the maternity hospital of the University Hospital of Brasília-Brazil up to 12 months were included in the study. Four examiners trained and calibrated for the application of the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool -BTAT (Ingram et al., 2015) performed the lingual frenulum examinations within 48 hours of birth.
Results: A result of a total of 80 babies (40 twin pairs), in the sample 52% were girls and 48% boys. Most babies (70.96%) were born premature with a mean weight of 2289.79g (± 457.7). When homozygotes (mean weight 2055.83 +- 500.59) and heterozygote (2474.36 +- 408.76) were compared, a statistically significant difference was observed between them (p = 0.007). On examination at the maternity hospital, four babies showed tongue tie (5%). The 4 babies are homozygotes, 2 are siblings and 2 had their respective siblings with normal tongue frenulum. Four frenotomies were performed considering the presence of tongue tie and breastfeeding difficulty.
Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, the present study concludes that the presence of tongue tie was 5% and the presence of tongue tie was not associated with the twin characteristics of infants, regardless of whether they are homozygous or heterozygous.
