Impact of an Oral Health Program on Pre-School Children of Rural and Urban Areas in Peru
Objectives: To compare the impact on oral health of "Sonrisa Feliz" program for pre-school children in urban and rural area in Peru Methods: Study quasi-experimental performed in pre- school children: 118 in urban area (Group A) and 129 in rural area (Group B) and their parents who received educational intervention in oral health with "Sonrisa Feliz" for 6 months. In both groups were used the same educational intervention witn equal content, educational material and diverse methodology. Before and after the educational intervention were evaluated: the level of knowledge about oral health, the state of oral health with the ceod index, the risk of caries and the level of oral hygiene with IHOS in pre-school children and the level of knowledge about oral health of their parents. The questionnaires (pre-test and pos-test) for determined the level of knowledge in oral health of pre-school children and their parents were validated previously. Results: In both groups A y B: Before of intervention, the oral health knowledge level in 3, 4, 5 year-old pre-school children was (2.58, 2.92, 3.05) (2.31, 3.94, 4.13) respectivel. The dental hygiene state with IHOS (1.93, 2.09, 2.09) (2.19, 2.09, 2.09). In their parents the knowledge level were (7.97, 7.6, 7.65) (8.41, 8.94, 7.46). After of educational intervention in pre-school children, there was a decrease of IHOS in both groups (0.82, 1.06, 1.07) (1.09, 1.3, 1.03). There was an increase of the oral health knowledge level of the pre-school (5.53, 6.14, 6.65) (5.76, 6.28, 6.61) and also their parents (10.44, 10.54, 10.51) (11.1, 11.11, 10.17). There was a statistically significant effect after the educational intervention (p < 0.05) determined by Student's t-Test Conclusions: The program "Sonrisa Feliz” was accepted by pre-school children and their parents, achieving the impact in the oral health of pre-school children in two different geographical areas rural and urban in Peru.
