Bond Strength of Different Silane Application Time and Post-silanization Protocols

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the contact angle and bond strength after different silane application times and post-silanization protocols on lithium disilicate glass ceramic.
Methods: Lithium disilicate ceramic plaques (IPS e-max CAD) of 10 × 6 × 2 mm were divided into 9 groups according to application time of silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer) and post-silanization protocols: 1) Applied for 10s, dry for 5s; 2) Applied for 10s, dry for 5s, rinsing for 10s, dry for 30s; 3) Applied for 10s, dry for 5s, then dry with hot air for 20s; 4) Applied for 30s, dry for 5s; 5) Applied for 30s, dry for 5s, rinsing for 10s, dry for 30s; 6) Applied for 30s, dry for 5s, dry with hot air for 20s; 7)Applied for 60s, dry for 5s; 8) Applied for 60s, dry for 5s, rinsing for 10s, dry for 30s; 9) Applied for 60s, dry for 5s, dry with hot air for 20s. Contact angles were determined using a goniometer. Silicone mold with six cylindrical-shaped compartments was placed on each ceramic surface. Resin cement was placed and polymerized. After 24h storage in relative humidity at 37°C, each specimen was subjected to a micro-shear testing using universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis tests and pair-wise comparison by Mann-Whitney, with Bonferroni correction (α= 0.05). Failure mode was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy.
Results: There was no difference on contact angle in all groups. However, 10s silane application followed by only drying had the worst results on μSBS (p≤ 0.05). The other groups did not show difference. All failures found were cohesive.
Conclusions: Ten seconds application time followed by rinsing or drying with hot air, seem enough to achieve an reliable bond strength.
