Antibacterial Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Pulp and Chalices of Physalis peruviana L. Against Streptococcus mutans
Objectives: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of pulp and chalices and aqueous extract of the pulp of Physalis peruviana L. against Streptococcus mutans Methods: The ethanolic extracts of the fruit pulp (PPE) and chalices (PCE), and the aqueous extract of pulp (PPA) were prepared. A bacterial suspension of Streptococcus mutans was inoculated on Mueller Hinton agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood. Paper disks were soaked in different concentrations of the extracts: 50%, 75%, 80%, 90%, 100% of PPE; 50%, 100% of PCE; and 65%, 75%, 90%, 100% of PPA. Disks soaked in 0.12% w/v chlorhexidine were used as positive controls. The plates were incubated for 48 hours under anaerobic conditions. Subsequently, the measurements of the inhibition zones were performed with a vernier caliper. Results: PPE extract produced inhibition zones at concentrations of 75, 80, 90 and 100%: 8.57, 9.19, 9.71 and 10.40 mm respectively. The 100% PCE extract produced an 11.63 mm inhibition zone. The PPA extract at 90 and 100 % generated zones of smaller diameter, 9.00 y 9.38 mm respectively. The average diameter of the inhibition zones caused by 0.12% chlorhexidine was 17.00 mm. Conclusions: The ethanolic extracts of Physalis peruviana L. have an antibacterial effect on Streptococcus mutans. Being, the ethanolic extract of the chalice that presented the greatest antibacterial effect. Aqueous extracts of the pulp have less antibacterial effect.
