Influence of Background on the Color Perception in Dentistry
Objectives: To evaluate the influence of two different color backgrounds on the perception of color differences in dentistry.
Methods: The study was approved by the local Ethics in Research Committee. Twenty observers (Dentists - gender balanced) participated in the study. A software was especially developed for performing a psychophysical experiment based on visual assessments. Images of simulated upper central incisor pairs (n = 60) over black or white backgrounds were consecutively and randomly displayed on a calibrated display (19-inch Full High Definition LED TV) in a dark room and at 30 cm from the observer. CIELAB (△E*ab) and CIEDE2000 (△E00) metrics were used to calculate the visual thresholds (50:50% PT- perceptibility threshold; and 50:50% AT- acceptability threshold) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). An S-shaped curve was used as a fitting procedure. Data was statistical analyzed using paired t-test (∝=0.05).
Results: The 50:50% PT values were 1.86 (95%CI: 0.84 - 2.79) for black background and 1.82 (95%CI: 0.94 - 2.74) for white background using △E*ab; and 1.28 (95%CI: 0.58 - 1.90) for black background and 1.26 (95%CI: 0.52 - 1.95) for white background using △E00. The 50:50% AT values were 2.90 (95%CI: 2.04 -3.79) for black background and 3.58 (95%CI: 2.65 - 5.30) for white background using △E*ab; and 1.97 (95%CI: 1.42 - 2.51) for black background and 2.43 (95%CI: 1.73 - 3.53) for white background using △E00. All R2 values were above 0.80. The 50:50% AT values showed significant differences between both backgrounds for both color difference metrics (p≤0.05).
Conclusions: Lower values of acceptability thresholds for color differences using a black background indicate that dentists could use it to evaluate slighter differences in challenging cases of esthetic treatments.
