Effectiveness of an Educational Intervention in Oral Health School Promoters
Objectives: To investigate the effectiveness of an oral health educational intervention in improving the knowledge and behavior of oral health in schools. Part one, training of the oral health promoters. Methods: Educational intervention study with quantitative methodology of a quasi-experimental type. Forty students, who met the profile, were selected to be JAEF oral health promoters. Their training was carried out during the year 2018, through a Cycle of Conferences, the study of a Theoretical Guide on Oral Health and the study of the Green & Vermillon Oral Hygiene Index (OHI). The evaluation of their training was carried out through the application of a validated questionnaire on Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices in Oral Health (KAPOH). This consisted of 28 items in total, of which 9 belong to the Knowledge dimension (≥5: favorable), 12 of Practices (≥4: favorable) and 7 of Attitudes (≥18: favorable), which was evaluated three times, before, during and after the training. The evaluation of the Oral OHI was made twice, before and after the training. This was carried out during the months of April to October of this year (2019). For the analysis, the ANOVA-test and the Student's t-test was applied for dependent samples using the SPSS software version 25.0 Results: The knowledge and attitudes towards oral health in students showed an improvement in the intermediate assessment and even more in the final assessment. The improvement in oral health practices took more time, improving only in the final assessment. Knowledge (mean intra-groups:1.789 ANOVA-Test, p:0.000), Practice (mean intra-groups: 1.298 ANOVA-Test, p:0.000) and Attitude (mean intra-groups: 9.729 ANOVA-Test, p:0.002). The OHI was regular (Student's t-test, p:0.000)
Conclusions: A favorable change was observed after having applied a training program to Oral Health School Promoters, which enables them to disseminate knowledge, attitudes and good oral health practices to their classmates in the future study.
