Patient Perception on Digital vs. Conventional Impression: A Meta-analysis
Objectives: Although intraoral scanning (IOS) could be consider more patient friendly and time efficient when compared to conventional impression method (CIM). it is not consensus in the literature. Aim: A systematic review/meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the patient perception regarding both techniques.
Methods: A search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database, Brazilian Library in Dentistry, Cochrane Library, and Gray literature for randomized clinical trials comparing IOS and CIM. The primary outcome was patient perception (satisfaction), determined using VAS scale. The risk of bias tool from the Cochrane Collaboration was used for quality assessment of the studies. The studies from which the information could be extracted were included for meta-analysis.
Results: A total of 1625 articles were identified. Six remained in the qualitative synthesis and all studies were considered at “unclear” risk of bias in the key domains. The meta-analysis was conducted using the random effects model and mean difference was calculated. The patient perception was 21.41 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 15.31 to 27.52; p<0.001), favoring IOS. The heterogeneity was moderate (I2=48%, p=0.09).
Conclusions: Patients showed higher satisfaction with the IOS compared to conventional impression method.
