Mechanical Effects Of Punica Granatum Containing-Dentifrice On Dentures
Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze in vitro the effect of one dentifrice with the antimicrobial Punica granatum L. extract (pomegranate) on the mass, roughness, microhardness and color of acrylic resin dentures base.
Methods: Thirty specimens of acrylic resin dentures base were randomly distributed in 3 groups (n=10): distilled water (DW) such negative control, Commercial Dentifrice (CD) such positive control and Punica granatum L. containing-dentifrice (PD). The specimens of the DW, CD and PD groups were brushed for a 5 year simulated period. The effects of mechanical brushing were evaluated before (T0) and after the brushing for 12 (T1), 36 (T2) and 60 (T3) months. The data were statistically analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and comparated by repeated-measures ANOVA and Bonferroni test (p<0.05).
Results: In this study, on the color analysis we found these results after a 5-year-period: DW (p = 0.316), CD (p = 0.310) and PD (p = 0.187). About the microhardness the data were: DW (p = 0.274), CD (p = 0.634) and PD (p = 0.01). About the mass (mg) the data were DW (p = 0. 714), CD (p =0.892) and PD (p = 0.793). The roughness show the data as follows: DW (p = 0. 814), CD (p < 0.001) and PD (p = 0.206).
Conclusions: We concluded that Punica granatum L. dentifrice is an alternative for the daily cleaning of removable dentures without altering surface properties and composition of denture components for up to 60 months.
