Effect of a Pre-Impression Surface Modifier on Elastomer Flow
Objectives: Voids are common occurrences in precision dental impressions often resulting from a lack of adequate elastomer flow. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a pre-impression surface modifier (B4 Dentsply Sirona) on the flow of three low viscosity vinyl polysiloxane elastomers: Aquasil Ultra+ XLV Fast Set (Dentsply Sirona), Imprint 4 Super Quick Light (3M Oral Care), and Honigum Light Quad Fast (DMG). Methods: A proprietary mold (Figure 1) was created into which impression material was injected into a common port, flowing the elastomer through a bilateral torturous pathway (0.2 cm x 0.3 cm x 66.5 cm). The path of one side of the mold was lightly coated with the pre-impression surface modifier and the opposite side remained untreated as a control. Impression material was continuously injected until the elastomer first exited the path on one side of the mold. The mold was immediately placed in a 35oC heated oven. At the manufacturers recommended mouth removal times, the mold was opened and the paths were imaged using a flatbed scanner. Five specimens were made for each material. Mean and standard deviation values were calculated for path length flow and statistically analyzed using ANOVA and post-hoc testing of means by the Holm-Sidak test (p≤0.001). Letters (a-b) denote statistically significant differences between the groups. Results: Results are found in Table 1. Conclusions: Application of the pre-impression surface modifier enhanced the flow of all the elastomer groups. The flow of Aquasil Ultra+ XLV benefited most.
