Efficacy of PanaxadialSaponins-lsopropylMethylphenol Toothpaste in Reducing Gingivitis
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of PanaxadialSaponins-lsopropylMethylphenol toothpaste in controlling plaque and reducing gingivitis. PanaxadialSaponins(PDS) was extracted from panax notoginseng(Chinese herbal medicine), with the effect to scatter stasis swelling, stanch bleeding and relieve pain. Isopropyl Methylphenol(IPMP) has the effecfs of hemostasis, anti-inflammatory and sterilization. Methods: A total of 100 eligible subjects(aged 18-70 years, 37 males and 63 females ) were recruited in this randomized, double-blind, controlled, parallel clinical study. Subjects were randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group. After scaling, subjects in experimental group were designated toothpaste containing 0.5% PDS and 0.1% IPMP, while subjects in control group used toothpaste with same ingredients expect PDS&IPMP. All subjects were instructed to brush teeth twice a day with soft toothbrushes during the experiment. Other oral hygiene products shouldn't be used. Clinical examinations were performed at baseline, week 6, and week 12 by the same qualified examiner. Modified Loe-Silness gingivitis index and Quigley-Hein modified Turesky plaque index were used to evaluate the effect. SPSS19.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: 97 subjects completed the study. No side effects caused by the test toothpaste were reported. In the baseline examination, statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the plaque index and gingivitis index between the experimental group and the control group(P>0.05). The results of 6-week showed that the plaque index and gingivitis index decreased by 16.86%(P<0.05) and 14.77%(P<0.05), respectively. The results of the 12-week clinical examination showed that the plaque index decreased by 19.62%(P<0.05) and the gingivitis index decreased by 22.59%(P<0.05) compared with the control group. Conclusions: Compared with the negative control toothpaste, the toothpaste containing 0.5% PDS and 0.1% IPMP is more effective in controlling plaque, inhibiting the formation of plaque, reducing gingivitis, relieving gum problems and improving gum health.
