Evaluation of Water Sorption and Color Stability of Paste-Resin Composite

Objectives: To compare the water sorption and color stability of bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate (Bis-MEPP) -based paste resin composites (PRCs), bisphenol A diglycidylether methacrylate (Bis-GMA)-, bisphenol A ethoxylated dimethacrylate(Bis-EMA)-, and with urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA)-PRCs.
Methods: We used 1 type of Bis-MEPP-based resin, GNX144T2 (GNX, GC Corporation), and 2 types of Bis-GMA, UDMA, and Bis-EMA -based resins, Filtek Supreme Ultra (FSU, 3M ESPE), Tetric Evo Ceram (TEC, Ivoclar Vivadent), and 1 type of UDMA-based resin OMNICHROMA (OMN, Tokuyama Dental). Specimens (n=5) were stored in 20 mL distilled water (37°C, 7d) before water sorption measurement according to ISO 4049:2019. Color change was measured after soaking specimens in distilled water or red wine(each n=5; 7d), ΔE* was calculated, and the results were statistically analyzed by Tukey-Kramer method (p<0.05). After vapor-depositing test specimens of all conditions with Au-Pd, observation was performed at a magnification of 20,000 using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SU-70, Hitachi Ltd.) (SEM).
Results: GNX had the lowest water sorption and FSU had the highest. GNX had the smallest ΔE* for color change and FSU had the largest. Bis-MEPP-based GNX’s ΔE* for color change was significantly lower than that of the Bis-GMA, Bis-EMA and UDMA-based PRCs.
Conclusions: Compared with the Bis-GMA, Bis-EMA and UDMA-based PRCs used in this study, Bis-MEPP-based GNX had a lower water sorption. Moreover, our findings suggest that GNX has high color stability. From the result of SEM observation, TEC, FSU, and OMN are considered to have increased color change due to deterioration on the specimens surface.
