Does Plasma or Violet Light Affect Bleached Enamel Mineral Content?
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effect of non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) and violet LED (VL) on enamel mineral content submitted to 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) and 37% carbamide peroxide (CP). Methods: Ninety bovine dental blocks (7 x 4mm) were randomly treated, after initial surface microhardness evaluation, with specific bleaching protocols (n=10): NTAP, NTAP/HP, NTAP/CP, VL, VL/HP, VL /CP, HP, CP and control (C). After one week of storage in artificial saliva, phosphate (PO43-) and carbonate (CO32) concentrations were analysed by means of micro RAMAN spectroscopy. Calcium (Ca) to phosphorous (P) ratio (Ca/P) was also evaluated using either μEDX or spectrophotometry analysis of samples obtained after enamel microbiopsy technique. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (FT-Raman and μEDX) and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (enamel microbiopsy). Results: NTAP alone promoted greater PO43- concentration on enamel than VL and control groups (p<0.05) one week elapsed from bleaching procedures. Combination of NTAP with HP and CP also resulted in superior PO43- concentration than to VL/HP and VL/CP, respectively (p<0.05). Pairwise comparisons revealed no statistical differences on CO32- among groups. While μEDX evaluation demonstrated that NTAP and VL did not alter Ca/P ratio of enamel submitted to both bleaching gels (p>0.05), spectrophotometry showed that the ratio of enamel submitted to VL/HP was significantly lower than that obtained for HP (p=0.026). Conclusions: Mineral concentration (PO43-) of bleached enamel was favored by NTAP application, but the effect of bleaching gels and activation modes on Ca/P ratio was dependent on the evaluation method.
