Clinical and In-vitro Evaluations and Comparison of Avon Whitening Essentials
Objectives: The purpose of these conducted clinical and in-vitro studies were to evaluate and compare the stain removal and prevention efficacy of Avon Whitening Essentaials containing sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and high cleaning silica (HCS). Methods: In-vitro whitening evaluations were done by Modified Pellicle Cleaning Ratio measurement and the HAP-powder stain prevention/removal assessments. For clinical trial, subjects were assigned to each groups (n=33 per group): Group I: Avon Whitening Essentials, containing SHMP and HCS, Group II: a dentifrice containing HCS but not SHMP, Group III: a dentifrice containing regular silica but not SHMP. Subjects used the assigned dentifrice at home, brushed three times daily for two weeks. The whitening efficacy was determined by Vita classic shade guide and assessing a color change (L*a*b) via Shade Eye. Results: HAP powder assessments, ΔE (stain prevention) for coffee(1), tea(2), wine(3) stain prevention efficacy of Avon Whitening Essentials, 3D White, Cliden, LG regular toothpaste (Total 7) were demonstrated as respectively: (1) 4.96, 5.95, 23.73, 27.33 (2) 2.56, 2.67, 14.04, 20.43 (3) 1.76, 2.34, 5.87, 15.95. During the 2 weeks of the clinical trials, subjects with Group I toothpaste demonstrated significantly lower mean composite stain score when compared to Group II and III. Group II showed significantly lower stain score when compared to Group III. The modified PCR experiment result demonstrated comparable trends with the clinical study as shown on the table. Conclusions: Except for regular toothpaste, all tested marketed products including Cliden showed good whitening efficacy. However, the Avon Whitening Essentials toothpaste showed most outstanding whitening efficacy and was comparable to Crest 3D White. In addition, the clinical study and in-vitro study results showed highly comparable results and whitening trends. The whitening effect was triggered from the chemical, abrasive stain removal and chemical prevention.
