Erosive Tooth Wear (BEWE) and Risk Factors in Colombian Schoolchildren
Objectives: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has not been reported in schoolchildren in Bogotá. This study aimed at determining the prevalence of ETW and describe related factors 12-15-year olds from Bogotá. Methods: IRB and informed consents were provided. Sample size proportion formula using the Openepi web-program included 454 children. These were assessed at school settings by two calibrated examiners in ETW BEWE index (inter/intra examiner reliability Kappa value ≥0.7): 0-no wear, 1-initial loss, 2-<50% of surface area affected, 3-≥50% of surface area affected. All tooth surfaces were scored calculating two BEWE measures per individual: 1- Highest BEWE score, 2- Total BEWE score (sum of highest BEWE per sextant: 0-18). A 20-item interview questionnaire on ETW- related gastroesophageal, dietary and oral hygiene factors based on previously studied aspects was applied. Results: Mean age of children (n=454) was of 13.5±1.07 years (female: 61.8%). Most were middle-low social-economic status (71.1%) and attended private schools (68.7%). The prevalence of ETW was of 75.3%, with BEWE score 3 most frequently found (77.1%), followed by BEWE-2: 17.8%, and BEWE-1: 4.6%. The majority had a total BEWE score of 0-2 (73.8%), followed by 9-13 (11.2%), 3-8 (10.6%), and ≥14 (4.4%), with highest BEWE score being 16. The questionnaire disclosed that 33.2% reported gastroesophageal symptoms; only 1.9% experimented frequent vomiting periods; 61.4% eat/drink them (81.1%). Lime, tangerine and orange were the most frequently acidic fruits consumed daily by participants (13.8%, 11.2%, and 9.4%, respectively). Most participants (53.3%) reported brushing their teeth 2-3 times-a-day, never before eating (74.4&) and they brushed <10' after eating (61.9%). Conclusions: Colombian schoolchildren showed a high prevalence of ETW, most with BEWE score 3 as highest, and with a total BEWE score of 9-13. Liking acidic food/drinks and gastroesophageal symptoms were most frequently found risk factors.
