Color Match of One-Shade Universal Composite to Polychromatic Feldspathic Block

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color match of a one-shade universal composite and several conventional composites to polychromatic feldspathic porcelain as a standard surrogate for polychromatic teeth.
Methods: A polychromatic feldspathic CAD/CAM block (Shade S3PC; CEREC Blocks) was used to evaluate the color-matching ability of composites. An oval-shaped cavity (2 mm depth, 9/3 mm major/minor axes) was prepared in the block using a tapered-diamond bur. A one-shade universal composite (OC), two conventional composites (MC and FS, Shades A2B and A2), and a layering composite (ME, Shade A2E and A2D) were individually placed in the same cavity preparation five times after the application of a silicon-based separator to facilitate removal. After placement, the composite was covered with a glass slide and light-cured directly through the glass for 40 seconds using a light delivering 600 mW/cm2(Demi). Then the color was measured in three areas – incisal, body, and cervical on the ceramic and composite using a spectrophotometer (CrystalEye). Color differences (ΔE*ab) between the composites and the neighboring ceramic surface were calculated. ΔE*ab values were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α£0.05).
Results: The overall ΔE*ab values between the ceramic block and OC (4.50) and ME (4.39) were significantly lower than two conventional universal composites, MC (5.64) and FS (5.32) (p<0.05). Although no significant difference was found in the color match in incisal areas, OC showed the lowest mean delta E value. All materials except for FS showed values lower than the clinically acceptable level of color differences (≤3.3) in the incisal areas, but the color difference became more substantial in the body and cervical areas in all composites (Figure).
Conclusions: The color-matching ability of the newly developed one-shade composite was similar to the layering composite and superior to the traditional VITA-based universal composites.
