Influence of Internal Abutment Components on Screw Preload Before and After Cyclic Loading

Objectives: Compare screw torque values (Preload) before and after cyclic loading between abutments with engaging components and abutments with non-engaging components in single unit implant crowns.
Methods: A total of 10 implants were mounted on acrylic blocks. Screw retained metal single units were fabricated and divided into 2 groups: 1. 5 units with engaging abutments, 2. 5 units with non-engaging abutments. All units were designed in a similar manner with similar dimensions. New abutment screws were torqued into the respective abutments per manufacturer’s recommendations (35Ncm) twice, 10 minutes apart using a torque wrench and a digital torque meter. Both groups went through cyclic loading using cyclic loading machine, Electrodynamic Universal Testing Machine ElectroPlus E3000, under axial loading. Screw torque values before and after loading were measured. Data analysis was performed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
Results: Mean Preload before cyclic loading was 25.6 (Minimum: 24.5, Maximum: 28.0). Mean preload after cyclic loading was 24.4 (Minimum: 20.0, Maximum: 28.0). Paired sample t-test was performed for both groups to evaluate any differences in preloads before and after cyclic loading within each group, goup 1: p-value: .205 , goup 2: p-value: .256. To compare preload values between groups before and after cyclic loading, a Mann-Whitney test was performed: Before cyclic loading: p-value: .454, After cyclic loading: p-value: .462.

Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, internal abutment components did not demonstrate any significant influence on screw torque values (preload) before and after cyclic loading.
