Correlations of Medical and Psychosocial Factors on Oral Health Status From an Inner City Dental Clinic in Saskatchewan, Canada

Objectives: This research aims to identify medical and psychosocial factors affecting the clinical oral health status of patients accessing an inner city dental clinic in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional chart review of approximately 2000 charts is underway at the west side dental clinic in Saskatoon. Preliminary associations between psychosocial factors and clinical oral health status were evaluated using simple and bivariate comparisons.
Results: Preliminary results from 1212 surveys indicate that more than half of the respondents 54% (n=627) were within the ages of 36 to 65, 72% (n=869) were Indigenous, 72% (n=900) had dental insurance, and 82% (n=986) were on either social or welfare assistance. Six percent (n=78) of patients were recorded positive for HIV/AIDS while 3% (n=31) of the population reported both HIV and Hep C co-infection. Forty-nine percent (n=550) of patients were recorded to have dental decay with a mean of 5.5 (sd=4.1). Approximately 74% of the charts recorded some of the restorations which included 12% (n=97) of amalgam, 40% (n=335) of resin and 48% (n=402) of both filling materials while 3% (n=34) reported having preventative fissure sealants done. The mean decayed missing filled (DMF) was 5.6 (sd=3.4). In the bivariate analyses, smoking ([mean]: 3.0 vs. 2.1), being positive for HIV/AIDS ([mean]: 4.1 vs. 2.6] and, being pregnant ([mean]: 3.7 vs. 2.7) appeared to be associated with a higher number of mean decayed teeth compared to their counterparts.
Conclusions: Although data is currently being entered, the analyzed data thus far revealed a mean DMF of 5.6. Most of the patients accessing this clinic were recorded to have both amalgam and resin restorations. Having a positive HIV status, tobacco use and being pregnant were significantly associated with dental decayed and missing teeth.
