Effect of 10% Carbamide Peroxide on Tooth Shade, Plaque Index and Gingival Index During Invisalign Treatment

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate whether 10% carbamide peroxide used during Invisalign treatment can enhance tooth shade esthetics while decreasing plaque levels and improving gingival health indices. In this clinical study, randomized subjects undergoing Invisalign treatment at Western University of Health Science’s Dental Center were studied to provide evidence for the efficacy of 10% carbamide peroxide in minimizing plaque accumulation and enhancing gingival health while improving tooth shade esthetics.
Methods: Subjects undergoing Invisalign treatment at The Dental Center were screened based on specific inclusion/ exclusion criteria (IRB FB18/IRB/109). Twenty patients were randomly divided into 2 groups; experimental, who received 10% Carbamide peroxide (Ultradent) to use with existing invisalign trays; and control group, who did not receive bleaching. All patients were evaluated by 2 examiners at baseline time 0 and after 4 weeks on the basis of tooth shade (using a Vitapan Classical shade guide), plaque (measured usingTuresky Modification of the Quigley-Hein Index) and gingival indices (measured using Löe and Silness Gingival Index). Clinical photographs of dentition were also documented.
Results: There was significant improvement in tooth shade and plaque as well as gingival indices in experimental patients undergoing bleaching compared to control group.
Conclusions: 10% Carbamide peroxide may be used in invisalign trays and is effective as a tooth bleaching agent that can also improve gingival health and decrease plaque accumulation
