Diode Laser Versus Simvastatin Gel as Pulpotomy Agents in Primary Molars- A Single Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Objectives: This study aimed to compare and evaluate the efficacy of Diode laser and Simvastatin gel as a novel medicament in pulpotomy of primary molars. Methods: A single blind randomized controlled study design was used for this trial. Hundred primary molars indicated for pulpotomy in 4-8-year-old children were randomly allocated into: Diode laser (Group I) and Simvastatin gel (Group II). In group I, pulpotomy was performed as per standard methods using laser for removal of infected coronal pulp, no medication was used thereafter; and in group II, a spoon excavator was used to remove coronal pulp followed by placement of Simvastatin gel as a medicament on remaining pulp. All teeth were restored with appropriate restorative material followed by stainless steel crowns. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed by blinded evaluators at 3 and 12 months post operatively. For the inter-group analysis, Chi-square test was performed while, intra-group analysis was done using McNemar’s test. P value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: At 12 months follow up examination, teeth in group I and II showed clinical success rate of 76% and 80.4% respectively as per AAPD criteria. On radiographic analysis, no evidence of pathology was seen in 52.1% of teeth in group I and 65.2% in group II. No statistically significant difference in the clinical and radiographic success rates was observed among the groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: Both Simvastatin gel and Diode laser had similar efficacy for primary tooth pulpotomy, clinically and radiographically at the end of 12 months. Findings of the study suggest that pure simvastatin gel can be considered an alternative novel medicament for vital pulp therapies in human primary molars.
