Knowledge of the ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines Among Dentists
Objectives: The American Dental Association (ADA) Clinical Practice Guidelines have been established on several key topics in dentistry in order to aid dental practitioners in making evidence-based clinical decisions in patient care. The guidelines were developed by expert panels convened by the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and include recommendations based on systematic reviews of evidence and subsequent risk-benefit analysis of treatment options. However, practicing clinicians may be unaware of the guidelines and/or may lack the skills to interpret the recommendations and apply them in clinical practice. The aim of our study is to assess dentists’ interpretation of research results, and their awareness, understanding, and acceptance of the ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines. Methods: For the purpose of this IRB-approved study, we focused on five evidence-based ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines. We created a short questionnaire, which was administered to dentists using the NYU Survey Service Qualtrics, to anonymously collect their responses. The questionnaire was organized into three blocks: 1) knowledge of research design and awareness of the existence of ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2) interpretation of results and the Guidelines, and 3) willingness to apply the evidence in practice and suggestions for increasing the accessibility of the Guidelines. The overall results will be analyzed to evaluate the current awareness, knowledge, and acceptance of the ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines, in order to determine if and in what capacity further continuing education should be encouraged. Results: Based on initial research, we believe that the survey will increase our understanding of dentists' awareness, knowledge, and interpretation of the recent ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines and the possible barriers to their use. Conclusions: We believe that it is imperative to improve awareness and understanding of the evidence-based ADA Clinical Guidelines and encourage implementation of the Guidelines in clinical practice.
