Evidence-Based Publication Trends in Dental Specialty Journals, 1997-2016
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of the trends in the number of higher-level evidence (HLE) publications in the professionally owned journals for general dentistry and six dental specialties from 1997-2016. Methods: The journals included were: General Dentistry (Gen Dent), Journal of Periodontology (J Periodontol), Journal of Endodontics (J Endod), Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (J Oral Maxillofac Surg), American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop), Pediatric Dentistry Journal (Pediatr Dent), and Journal of Prosthodontics (J Prosthodont). Each journal’s publications were analyzed from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2016 using NLM’s PubMed database filters to identify the number of HLE publications. Each journal was filtered by article type to show only meta analyses, randomized control trials, and systematic reviews. “Results by year” were then downloaded in an Excel file to calculate the number of publications for each two-year increment. The average number and percent change of HLE publications were also calculated for each journal for the 1997-2016 time period. Results: The journals with the highest and lowest average number of HLE publications, per 2-year intervals, were the Journal of Periodontology (78) and the Journal of Prosthodontics (8), respectively. The journals with the highest and lowest percent increase in HLE publications were the Journal of Endodontics (70%) and the PediatricDentistry Journal (5%), respectively. Conclusions: Overall, there was a positive trend in the percentage of HLE publications from 1997 to 2016. The data was limited to the year 2016 because of incomplete indexing by the National Library of Medicine starting in 2017. Growth in HLE publications is expected to continue in future years due to an increased understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice in dentistry.
