A Toothpaste Containing Enzymes and Proteins Improves Gum Health
Objectives: To measure the efficacy of a toothpaste containing enzymes and proteins on improving the gingival health condition and reducing supra-gingival plaque over a period of 26 weeks (w) compared to a control toothpaste. Methods: This was a double-blind, randomised, parallel group efficacy study. After screening, 251 healthy subjects aged 18-70 were enrolled [average Gingival index (Löe & Silness) GI ≥ 1.0 and Plaque index (Modified Quigley and Hein) PI ≥ 1.5], and randomly allocated to one of the two test products to use twice a day for 26w with 198 subjects completing the study. GI and PI assessments were conducted at baseline, 4w, 13w and 26w.
The two toothpastes were: Control toothpaste containing 1450 ppm F as Sodium Fluoride Test toothpaste containing natural enzymes, proteins and 1450 ppm F as Sodium Fluoride (ZendiumTM)
Difference between products was analyzed using ANCOVA at p<0.05. Model included product and gender as fixed effect and baseline as covariate. Results: After 4w, 13w and 26w, significant product difference between test and control toothpaste was observed with test toothpaste showing an improvement relative to control for both GI and PI, see Table. Conclusions: A toothpaste containing natural enzymes and proteins showed significant gingival health and plaque reduction benefits compared to a control toothpaste, after 4 weeks, 13 weeks and 26 weeks of product use.
