Three-dimensional Changes Assesment Of Self-ligating, Conventional And Mini-tubes Systems After Orthodontic Treatment

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare crown angulation, inclination and arch dimension changes after the orthodontic treatment between three brackets systems: self-ligating, conventional and mini-tubes.
Methods: Pre and post-treatment digital models from 114 patients with similar skeletal and dental pretreatment parameters aged 16 to 44 years who finished orthodontic treatment were divided into three groups. In group 1 (n=40) patients were treated with self-ligating brackets. In group 2 (n=40) patients were treated with conventional pre-adjusted brackets. In group 3 (n=34) patients were treated with a mini-tubes system. Upper and lower final crown angulation (tip), inclination (torque) and arch dimension were measured using Dolphin software (Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif, USA) by a previously calibrated operator. The statistical analysis was carried out with a Chi-square test, ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis test, and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test.
Results: No statically significant differences between the groups were found in the changes after orthodontic treatment, except in the upper inter-canine distance, lower right first molar torque, lower left second premolar tip and lower right central incisor torque and tip. Meanwhile, in the comparison of pre and post-treatment intragroup changes statistically significant differences (P<0.05) were found in most of the studied variables.
Conclusions: Pre and post-treatment angulation, inclination, and arch dimension values between the three orthodontic appliances type showed no statically significant or clinically detectable differences in this sample.
