Functional Dentition And 12-month change in BMI Among Thai Older Adults
Objectives: To explore the association between functional dentition (FD) and 12-month change in body mass index (BMI) among Thai older adults. Methods: Seven hundred and eighty-eight Thai adults, aged 60 years and above, living independently in Phetchaburi (Thailand) participated in the study. Assessments of cognitive ability and functional independence were completed before consent was obtained. Information on demographic factors (sex, age, residence area), socioeconomic status (education and wealth), chronic conditions (hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes), and health behaviours (smoking and physical activity) were collected during interviews. Dental examination assessed the number of functional units and denture use. FD was defined as having all six anterior and ≥4 posterior contacts without severely mobile teeth or root remnants. Height and weight were clinically determined at baseline and 12 months later and used to estimate BMI. The association between FD with each body measurement was assessed in linear regression models adjusting for sociodemographic factors, chronic conditions, health behaviours and total energy intake. Results: Six hundred and fifty-one participants were retained after 12 months (82.6%). Retained participants were more likely to be female, younger and educated than those lost to follow-up. In terms of oral health, 14.1% of participants had FD, 20.1% had non-FD but wore dentures, and 65.7% had neither FD nor dentures. The mean BMI was 24.39 (SD: 4.66) at baseline and the mean BMI change was 0.20 (SD: 1.66). Participants with FD and those with non-FD but wearing dentures had, respectively, 0.24 (95%CI: -0.62, 0.13) and 0.08 (95%CI: -0.40, 0.25) units lower BMI than those with neither FD nor dentures. These differences remained unchanged after adjustment for confounders. Conclusions: This 12-month longitudinal study among older adults in Thailand provided no support for an association between FD and BMI.
