Comparative Analysis Of US Healthcare Spending

Objectives: Healthcare expenditures in the United States overall have raised dramatically in recent decades, yet the distribution of expenditures across demographic groups during this time is less clear. This study sought to examine healthcare expenditures in the United States by various demographics over the past two decades.
Methods: We obtained the data from the 1996 to 2016 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, and performed comparative analysis of total US healthcare expenditures against various demographics over the last twenty years. All expenditures were adjusted for to the year 2016 dollars. Graphical display of various demographic groups’ expenditures was constructed.
Results: Average healthcare expenditures per person in the United States have an increasing trend overall, however there is significant variation between and even within certain demographic groups over the past twenty years. The greatest increase of average spending has been with the divorced population of over 3.5K in the past two decades, followed by those who are 65 years old and older. The uninsured have incurred the least amount of spending in the United States during this time.
Conclusions: The disparity in healthcare expenditures among many demographic groups keeps widening between the racial demographic groups in the United States throughout the past two decades.
