Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. Isolated from Subgingival Biofilm

Objectives: In this investigation, we aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococccus spp. isolated from the microbiota of individuals with distinct periodontal clinical status.
Methods: Subgingival biofilm was collected from patients with periodontal health (H, n = 33), gingivitis (G, n = 31), generalized aggressive (AgP, n = 24) or chronic periodontitis (CP, n = 75, and cultivated. Isolates of staphylococci were identified by MALDI-TOF and antibiotic sensitivity profiles determined by standard methods. Microbial differences among groups, as well as associations between clinical groups and susceptibility profiles were sought by chi-square test.
Results: Subgingival biofilm was collected from patients with periodontal health (H, n = 33), gingivitis (G, n = 31), generalized aggressive (AgP, n = 24) or chronic periodontitis (CP, n = 75, and cultivated. Isolates of staphylococci were identified by MALDI-TOF and antibiotic sensitivity profiles determined by standard methods. Microbial differences among groups, as well as associations between clinical groups and susceptibility profiles were sought by chi-square test.
Conclusions: Staphylococcus species can be found in the subgingival biofilm regardless of the periodontal condition. The wide variability found in antibiotic-resistance patterns should concern clinicians empirically selecting antibiotic treatment regimens for treating patients with periodontal disease.
