Treatment of Peri-Implantitis Comparing Two Resorbable Membranes: A Pilot Study.

Objectives: Dental implants are a successful treatment however they can be associated with peri-implantitis where regeneration therapy is often employed. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical effects of two resorbable membranes (amniotic and collagen) combined with bone allograft for peri-implantitis treatment.
Methods: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Detroit Mercy (IRB#1617-11). Nine patients who previously received dental implants and showing signs of peri-implantitis were recruited. The implants were treated surgically using bone allograft and a resorbable membrane and patients randomly assigned into two groups (One receiving amniotic and the second receiving collagen resorbable membrane) with bone allograft. Patients were seen at baseline, 1&2 weeks, 1, 3, 6 months where probing depths (PD) and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were collected at baseline, 1,3,6 months.
Results: There was an overall reduction in PD from baseline to 6 months. The mean PD difference and SD was 0.8 +/-1.34 (p<0.05). Minimal CAL gain of (0.16 +/- 2.07) was observed but the difference was not significant (p>0.05).
Conclusions: The use of amnion-chorion membranes in treatment of peri-implant defects showed promising clinical outcomes, but the results should be interpreted with caution due to small sample size.
