Relationship Between Periodontal Disease And Osteoporosis In Postmenopausal Women

Objective: Osteoporosis is defined as an age related disorder. It is characterized by decreased bone mass and increased susceptibility to fractures, is the most common metabolic bone-disease, affecting at least 30% of all postmenopausal women. This study aimed to analyze quantitatively, through case-control study, the periodontal status of postmenopausal women and its relation to osteoporosis, in addition to examining the clinical assessment of oral hygiene and periodontal tissue inflammation.

Method: The sample consisted of 99 postmenopausal women, and G1 (n = 45), G2 (n = 31) and G3 (n = 23), which were submitted to the examination of periodontal status, by clinical attachment level  (CAL), probing depth (PD), gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI) and then carried to the examination of bone densitometry.

Result: The values ​​of the variables CAL, PS, IG and IP revealed mainly statistical difference between groups G1 and G3 and between G2 and G3. Moreover, the results showed a higher percentage of presence of periodontal disease in the group of women with osteoporosis.

Conclusion: The clinical parameters of periodontal status of postmenopausal women interviewed and analyzed expressed its relation to osteoporosis.
