Complications of Zygomatic Implants: Evidence-Based Literature Review

Background: The zygomatic fixture has been an advance in rehabilitation of atrophic maxillas. Situations where the atrophic maxillary implied only in treatment with bony grafts, can now be rehabilitated in a fast and much less wasteful way. The success rate of Zygomatic Implants(ZI) is similar to conventional implants. However, little has been argued about the problems related to this procedure.

Objective: The present study review the literature for arguing the complications occurrence related to Zygomatic Implants.

Method: A systematic literature review was conducted. The research database PUBMED was performed using the terms and / or text words complications OR failure OR follow-up AND Zygomatic Implants. The initial search identified 143 articles relating ZI. Others articles were also identified from the reference citations of these, and found in other databases. Each article was reviewed, however, only 23 mention any complications associated with ZI, and might be considered in this study.

Result: The commonest related complication with the rehabilitations with ZIs was mucositis, followed by sinusitis, paresthesias, buccosinusal fistula, screw loosening, hematoma, labial laceration, soft tissue dehiscence, ecchymosis, orbital cavity penetration, aspergilosis(fungal sinisitis) and intracerebral penetration.

Conclusion: According to the accomplished review can be conclude that despite the low morbidity of this treatment for maxillary atrophy, has some immediate complications and late to be considered in the choice of rehabilitation treatment. Additional research is needed in this area with a longer follow-up.
