Method: Data were collected from the Outpatient Information System of the Brazilian Health Care System (SIA-SUS). Annual rates per ten thousand inhabitants of total specialized dental procedures performed in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, between 2004 and 2010, were calculated. Procedures were stratified by specialty in surgical, periodontal and endodontic. Time series were analyzed using Excel for Windows® software, version 2007.
Result: The total specialized dental procedure rate ranged from 280.29 per ten thousand inhabitants in 2004 to 367.69 in 2010. The peak value rate was 422.79 per ten thousand inhabitants in 2007. Periodontal procedures rate increased from 48.76 per ten thousand inhabitants in 2004 to 103.03 in 2010. Endodontic procedures rate ranged from 21.57 per ten thousand inhabitants in 2004 to 62.43 in 2010. Surgical procedures showed a trend toward stability during the assessment period.
Conclusion: There was an increase in the trend toward performance of specialized dental procedures in the Brazilian Health Care System in Minas Gerais State. Periodontal and endodontic procedures were the key contributors to this trend.
