Method: thirteen commercial brands of composite resins were selected, all A2 shade. G1 Filtek™ Z350, G2 TPH®3, G3 Tetric®NCeram, G4 Amelogen® Plus EN, G5 ice, G6 Filtek™ Z100, G7 Brilliant Enamel, G8 Point 4™, G9 Premisa™, G10 Grandio®, G11 Amelogen® Plus D, G12 Solare, G13 Kalore. Sixteen standardized discs (10mm diameter and 2 mm thick) were prepared for each group and stored for 24 hours at 37°C. They were randomly divided into four subgroups, according to (F) and polished according to manufacturer’s instructions for J Jiffy®, SS Super Snap®, AA Astropol® /Astrobrush® and SL for Sof-lexTM. Samples were submitted to an aging procedure by means of a fluorescent light UVB-313 during 500 hours (ASTM G154-06; G151-10 4329-05). In order to determine translucency, scanned digital images (JPG 1200 dpi) with black and White background and CIELab scale were obtained over three series of determinations: pre-polishing (PreF), post polishing (PostF) and aged (UV-A). Variations in ΔE between backgrounds was registered as final data. For statistical analysis repeated measures ANOVA with two factors (C and F) was applied, Tukey test was applied for multiple comparisons inter-subjects and Bonferroni for intra-subjects, from SPSS 19.0 ®. P value was established at 0,05.
Result: Inter-subjects effect T level C p=0,000 with significant differences. Homogeneous groups, mean (ΔE) and standard deviation (0,196±) were:G4:10,81> G3:7,34= G10:7,3≥ G6:7,01= G13:7,01= G5: 6,75= G12: 6,55≥ G7: 6,28= G8:6,19≥ G9:5,88≥ G1:5,8≥ G2:5,23> G11:3,8. Evaluation for T level Fp=0,065 with no significant differences. Mean (ΔE) and standard deviation (0,109±) were:SS: 6,8= SL:6,7= J:6,6= AA:6,4. Intra-subject effect T p=0,000 with significant differences. Values with mean (ΔE ) and standard deviation were:PreF:8,26(0,09)> PostF:7,81(0,07)> UV-A 3,782(0,09).
Conclusion: under this in vitro investigation, polishing, besides system applied, and accelerated UV aging decrease composite resins translucency.
