To evaluate the periodontal status and the incidence of Candida spp (C.spp), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Prevotella intermedia (Pi), in patients taking medication for BPH.
Method:
A cross sectional study in which patients included adults (age 65 ± 5) with BPH with Terazosin and Tansulosina medicated, controls were adult patients without prostate problems. The patients had no other systemic disease and were not smokers and were grouped according to periodontal status at time of examination (the same included probing depth, attachment loss, bleeding on probing, plaque index, gingival index and radiographic evaluation). In each patient a sample of subgingival plaque from the tooth that had more probing depth and attachment loss. The samples were seeded and conventional tests were performed to identify C. spp, Pg, and Pi. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and the coefficient of association of Sommers.
The time points were 0,6,12,18 months
Result:
Patients taking drugs for treatment had a higher incidence of chronic periodontitis in the control group. (Association coefficient d Sommers = 0.19). Only patients who took these drugs were isolated non-albicans Candida species: C. tropicalis, C. krusei. periodontal status was worse over time
Conclusion:
Patients medicated with Terazosin and Tansulosina had a higher incidence of chronic periodontitis in relation to their respective controls.
