Prevalence of Candida spp in patients who do bodybuilding

Objective: to  determine the influence of drugs taken for bodybuilding in the prevalence of Candida spp in  men who go  to the gym

Method: : Patients consecutively included men inmunocompetetes. Bodybuilding that ingested drugs.
The control group were men who attended the gym but I did not eat hormonas. It was  conducted a survey and periodontal indicators were evaluated and mycological samples  from  oral mucosa and gingival crevices were taken.
Periapical roentgenograms were taken of both jaws.

Result: The cultures of yeast showed 91 isolates of six different species of Candida including C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, C. dubliniensis, C. glabrata and C. guilliermondii.
In most of the controls, was isolated Candida species in each periodontal pocket. `Prevalent species was C. albicans
The use of steroids caused a worse periodontal status, with severe periodontitis increased when compared with men who ate no intakePatients with oral steroids for bodybuilding had a mean plaque index of 59.5% and the control group had a average of 16.8%. The gingival index (p = 0.002) and plaque (p = 0.0001) were significantly different (ANOVA) in men who ate than those who did not.
The time of intake also influenced the periodontal status. In general, patients who used them for over three years showed a high incidence of moderate periodontitis
and severe, while the incidence of gingival health, gingivitis and periodontitis decreased slightly compared with those who ate less than three years.

Conclusion: Synthetic hormones induce changes by altering the microenvironment mycological and promote the growth of yeasts.
