Orthodontic Treatment For The Impacted Upper Central Incisors

Objective: To study the effect of treating the impacted upper central incisors which couldn’t erupt by surgical fenestration and orthodontic traction.

Method: 32 cases with 34 impacted upper central incisors were treated with surgical fenestration and orthodontic traction.

Result:  In 1 case the tooth erupt by traction. But the space is not enough and child’s parents refuse extraction and cause malalignment of the maxillary incisors. In 1 case the root curvature is severe and couldn’t move into alignment. In 1 case the tooth erupt after 3 months of traction. But the patient gave up treatment because the patient have no follow-up time. In the other 26 cases all the teeth moved into alignment. The average eruption time is 4.7 months. The longest time is 10 months. The shortest time is 1 month. 32 impacted teeth passed the pulp activity test. No root absorption and conglutination were found.

Conclusion: The chance of treatment, reasonable orthodontics method, less operative trauma, traction force, anchorage, control of inflammation are the keys of success.
