For two new hybrid polymers (IvoBase Hybrid / High Impact) combining properties of hot and cold polymers, the surface quality should be assessed and compared to results gained for established products.
Method:
A highly polished metal plate was duplicated with the materials given below and surface roughness was measured (Mar Surf Perthometer M2, Mahr, Göttingen, Germany) after one day of water storage as well as after another seven days of dry storage.
M1:.IvoBase Hybrid / IvoBase-Injector
M2: IvoBase High Impact / IvoBase-Injector
M3: IvoCap High Impact / IvoBase-Injector
M4: PalaXpress Ultra / PalaPress-Injector
M5: Futura Gen / Futura-Jet-Unipress-System
M6: ProBaseCold / Casting-Process
(M1 - M3, M6: Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein, M4: Heraeus Kulzer, Hanau, Germany, M5: Schütz Dental, Rosbach Germany).
Result:
The roughness values Ra for the two new hybrid polymers ranged between 0.5 to 1.0 µm and were comparable to those of the other injection-systems. In contrast, conventional casting led to rougher surfaces (Ra > 2.0 µm). Storage conditions of the plates had very little influence on the surface roughness.
Conclusion:
The two new denture base materials showed similar results compared to those of the other injection systems. Casting provided by far the worst surface quality.
