Management of Wasted Amount of Dental products At Dental Laboratory

Objective: this study is to evaluate the amount of the daily wasted materials in the dental laboratories. Moreover to convince the technicians to minimize the quantity of these wasted materials, and calculate the amount of the wasted gypsum products by comparing the amount of waste before using the weighing scale and after using it, in order to reduce the cost of the material especially the expensive one.

Method: The study assessed the wasted amount of gypsum products used at Makkah dental center during the production of the positive cast models of all clinical cases from the negative clinical impressions, and compare the old estimated procedure, measuring scoops procedure, and new weighing procedure, by using measuring weight scale. Questionnaires were distributed to the dental technicians to evaluate the amount of wasted materials, furthermore to convinced them to reduce the consumed materials and reduce the waste, deliberately minimize the costs, eventually the laboratories was supplied with weighing scale to be use to form all clinical models.

Result: The saving of the material after usage of the pre-weighted gypsum powder (new weighing procedure) about 1.35kg / day, 29.70kg / a month, and 356.40kg / a year.

Conclusion: The importance of this study was to save and reduce the wasted dental Gypsum products materials. Moreover, it can be considered an easy way and simple procedure or techniques to be applied to any laboratory. Although it is financially important by reducing the cost and improving the final laboratory woke, moreover assigning a well-trained technician to who can understand the nature of work without repeating the steps for each procedure in the dust room (impression pouring room). there were other advantages, which are:  decrease in cleaner numbers and cleaning materials required, healthier environment for the laboratory staff, leas maintains for sewage, and well management for infection control for impressions before pouring.
