Dentin Bond Strengths of Three Commercial Products

Bonding resin systems routinely undergo change in the desire to improve their performance, especially to dentin, which is the most desired performance outcome.  Objective:  Dentin shear bond strengths of Adper Single Bond Plus (SBP), Simplicity Adhesive (SA) and Vertise Flow (VF) using a flowable composite resin cylinder were compared herein. Method:  Recently extracted human 3rd molars, stored in aqueous 1% Cholramine-T were mounted in PVC cylinders using Vel-Mix dental stone.  These were wet sectioned to expose the occlusal dentin.  Subsequently these testing substrates were metallographically wet finished on silicon carbide paper to a 320 grit surface. Following manufacturers' directions, the dentin surface was prepared for bonding.  Then, small cylinders, made with the Ultradent testing system, of Venus flow flowable composite resin were bonded to the treated dentin.  Total curing time for the flowable resin cylinders was 90 seconds.  After 24 h storage at 37°C at 100% rh, the specimens were tested at 2 mm/min in shear mode to failure with the Ultradent hardware in a universal testing machine. Fifteen specimens made a cohort. Cohort mean shear bond strengths, in Megapascals with standard deviations, were determined and statistical analysis was by ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer HSD at 95% confidence. Results:  The dentin bond strength of SA was significantly stronger than that of SBP or VF (p < 0.0081).  Conclusion:  Of the three tested bonding systems SA was stronger than the others.
