Oral&Periodontal Health Status of Children with Chronic Renal Failure

Objective: The aim of this study was describing the oral and periodontal health status of children with chronic renal failure(CRF) after dental follow-up. Methods: At baseline and after two years, fifteen CRF children(mean age:13.87±3.32) were assessed by dental panoramic radiographs, DMF(T) index, Silness-Löe plaque index(PI), Muhlemann-Son Sulcus Bleeding Index(SBI) and probing pocket depth index(PDPI) according to the WHO criteria. Taking into account of 6 surfaces of all teeth, oral health status was determined by the assessment of gingival and dental health of the study population. Indices were utilized in that regard and were recorded for dental caries, dental plaque, gingival inflammation and gingival enlargement. Results: The mean DMF(T) index scores were found 0.67±0.82 in 2008 and 1.00±1.07 in 2010. No significant difference was observed between 2008 and 2010(p>0,05). When all teeth were examined, the presence of plaque was observed as % 75,6 and % 52.3 in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In addition, the mean PPDI scores of only first permanent molars were 1.78 ± 0.83 in 2008 as it was 1.28 ± 0.57 in 2010. Data were analyzed using the Fisher's exact chi-square and paired t-tests with NCSS 2007&PASS 2008 Statistical Software(Utah,USA) program. After routin dental treatments of CRF patients, it's observed that the decreased plaque score and the low mean PPDI score may be reflection of the developing oral health status. Conclusions: It is hoped that the present study will lead to a better understanding of the oral and dental maintenance is of outmost importance and dental treatment protocols should be implemented to avoid the exposure to dental pathogens in CRF patients.
