5 Year Tracking of Edentulous Patient Treatment at UAB

Objective:

The purpose of this research is to track the treatment of edentulous patients for conventional dentures or implant supported overdentures over 5 years in a dental school environment.

Methods:

The American College of Prosthodontists developed a prosthodontic diagnostic classification system known as the Prosthodontic Diagnostic Index (PDI). The PDI system was introduced to pre-doctoral students at UAB in  2005. Simultaneous tracking was done of patients who sought 2 implant supported overdentures treatment for their edentulous conditions. I

Results:

In the past 5 years edentulous patient treatment has decreased 83%. Patients chose the implant supported overdentures 1.6 times more than conventional dentures.. Pre-doctoral dental students have treated more PDI class I and Class II than Class III and Class IV edentulism on the main clinic.

Conclusion:

PDI reporting in the Salud system has enabled faculty to track total edentulism patient treatment at UAB.  Even though patient with implant supported overdentures takes longer to complete and has more visits than with conventional denture more patients are opting for implant retained overdentures. The economy in the USA has weakened and the clinic fee for dentures has increased 45%. Both factors have impact on the total edentulous patients seeking dental treatment at school.
